Single Dad Struggles To Be The Provider He Wants To Be
CBN.com — Frank Wilson enjoys days at the ballpark with his daughter and son. This single father makes every game a priority, because he knows first hand the importance of being there for his kids.
“My father, he was not around, and I always promised myself growing up, I would not be like my father,” says Frank.
Frank owns a small business, cleaning and detailing new homes. Work was steady until the economic crisis hit a few years ago and jobs came to a sudden halt.
“My business wasn’t accomplishing as much as I wanted to, the economy was slow,” he explains. “There were just many weeks when I didn’t have a paycheck coming in.”
While driving home one day, Frank saw a sign offering free bread in front of Operation Blessing’s partner, The Storehouse. He stopped to get some for his family.
“Times were tight and I just stopped to get a loaf of bread,” Frank remembers. “That was all that was on my mind, a loaf of bread.”
He came back the next week and got groceries and other household supplies from Operation Blessing. The food was a big help.
“You come home with some tomatoes in your basket, you have some apples, various kinds of canned fruit,” he points out. “If you try to put dollars and cents to it at the store, it’s a lot, it’s a lot.
Food is probably one of the highest things in the family budget,” continues Frank. “So if you saved money on your food, that’s an extra expense you can use on something else in your household.”
One week, when Frank picked up food from the storehouse, he was invited to church.
“I didn’t’ think much of it,” he says. “But here I am eating the bread, taking the food, at least I could go one time to church.”
Frank went to a service the next Sunday and found himself coming back each week.
“Whatever word the pastor gave out I would come home and reread some of it and I said this is different for me,” he explains. “I really never thought about reading the Bible.”
His faith grew, and soon his whole family was attending church. His daughter goes to Sunday school while his son helps out wherever he can. Franks sees that the food from Operation Blessing opened the door to something much deeper.
“I began to see the bread, not just bread where you make a sandwich and enjoy it for lunch, but there is the true bread of life,” Frank says.
The Storehouse has partnered with Operation Blessing for more than 20 years. Besides holding weekly food distributions, they reach out to thousands through large community events. Hot meals, groceries and health screenings are provided at no cost.
Frank was so touched by the help his family received from Operation Blessing, that he now gives back by volunteering with The Storehouse. His children have learned valuable lessons as well, and now host cookouts for neighborhood kids in need.
“Right here in our neighborhood people are literally being fed by food that comes directly from the warehouse of Operation Blessing,” shares Frank, happily. “It’s just good to know that they’re back there, that they’re your helping hand.”
